"A Thousand Words"
"A picture is worth a thousand words...". That is the saying that everyone is so familiar with and that is the experiment at Verbis Mille which is latin for a "Thousand Words".
This is a very simple website whos sole purpose to to test this well known expression. A picture will be published on our homepage and open for word submissions. It will remain there until 1,000 unique words are
recorded for that image. Once this occurs, the picture will be moved into the "Archive" section of the site where you can view the 1,000 words that were submitted for that particular picture.
An impossible task? We shall see. While a thousand words is a lot of unique words to use to describe any one image, the english language has plenty of words to choose from. While it is impossible to determine the exact number of
words in our lexicon the current Oxford Dictionary has about 170,000 words listed with almost 50,000 "obsolete" words. This doesn't take into account that many of the words can have multiple meanings or uses. Furthermore, there is the ever changing
use of slang which constantly expands and changes the english language. Most sources argue that there are well over half a million (500,000) words or word variations. That is a large pool to select from! So be creative. Push your boundaries and
come up with some good words to describe the photos that you see on Verbis Mille.
